If your brand doesn’t feel like you, it may have never really been yours. (Let me explain.)
It’s like when you’re in middle school and you want to dress like the punk rocker you are at heart but you need to wear the ill-fitted Costco outfit your parents bought you (yes I might be speaking from experience, and yes this is before it was acceptable to wear Costco clothes).
That’s why your brand doesn’t feel right and why you’re a little embarrassed to send people to your website.
Your brand doesn’t feel right because someone else chose the outfit.
Whether you were trying to emulate a competitor or you took in too much feedback from your friends, the result is the same: a diluted brand that doesn’t feel like you.
The solution isn’t to “modernize” your look, or hop on the latest design trend. You need to get to know your brand like a character in a book. A lot of times this means sitting with the “why does this brand exist” question —* the one that’s easy to skip in the business ideation phase because it’s kind of a hard question.
Don’t gloss over this exercise. Alex Hormozi didn’t get famous by skipping the hard parts. “The long way is the shortcut.” Do the deep dive into your brand and get to know it like it’s a person. What does your brand value? What emotions do you want your brand to evoke in your customers/clientele?
Building the internal character of your brand gives it depth, weight, and purpose. It strengthens the foundation that separates shallow brands from brands that resonate with people.
The shortcut leaves you feeling incomplete, and you keep revisiting your branding over and over again.
The long way gives you long-term clarity. You know who your brand is, why it exists, and who it serves. And you can finally focus on growing and scaling without the brand distraction.
When you finally have a brand that’s yours, you’ll know. It feels like settling into a notch cut out in your exact shape. Seamless, precise, intentional.
You stop feeling like your brand needs explaining.
It does that work for you.
*Yes I used an em-dash, AI will not ruin this for me.
